Implementation of Identified Priorities and Deliverables of Federal Ministry of Power

The Federal Ministry of Power formulates and implements Policies of the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) for the development and efficient operation of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

The Ministry monitors and superintends:

  • Generation
  • Transmission
  • Distribution

of Electricity.

This responsibility is enshrined in item 13 of the Concurrent Legislative List of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.

The Ministry is also guided by the provisions of:

  • The National Electricity Power Policy (NEPP) of 2001;
  • The Electricity Power Sector Reform (EPSR) Act of 2005;
  • The Roadmap for Power Sector Reform of August 2010;
  • Rural Electrification Implementation Strategy Plan 2016;

And

  • Investment Guidelines among others.

VISION

To be a key enabler of community and economic growth by facilitating delivery of functional, affordable and reliable power supply in Nigeria.

MISSION

Expedite national development by providing policies, systems and structures which ensure delivery of reliable, functional and cost effective power supply to Nigerians.

MANDATE

Initiate and coordinate policies and strategies for the sustainable development of reliable power supply in Nigeria.

The Ministry executes its mandate through Six (6) Agencies, namely:

  • Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC)
  • Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN)
  • Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA)
  • Rural Electrification Agency (REA)
  • Nigerian Electricity Liability Management Company (NELMCO)
  • National Power Training Institute (NAPTIN)
  • Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading PLC (NBET)

 

MINISTERIAL MANDATES AS SIGNED BY THE HONOURABLE MINISTERS & PERMANENT SECRETARY

  • Implement FG Power Policy focusing on direct willing buyer – willing seller arrangements.
  • Implement the Siemens Grid and Distribution Enhancement Project.
  • Increase distribution and transmission capacity to 11,000 MW by 2023.
  • Increase generation capacity by at least 1,000 MW annually by ensuring the completion of ongoing power generation projects
  • Complete Energizing Education Programme to reach 37 Universities and 7 Teaching Hospitals.
  • Complete the Energizing Economies Programme to reach at least 500,000 MSMEs.
  • Actively collaborate with the Private Sector to create a large number of well-paying jobs for Nigerian youth.
  • Implement strategy towards realisation of Mr. President’s June 12 promise to take 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in the next 10 years.
